    June 2001: U.S. Warned Of Impending Terrorist Attack Coming From Afghanistan


    New 9/11 documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act reveal: Less than three months before September 11, Secretary of State Colin Powell warned the Taliban that American intelligence had "high confidence" that "Afghan-based and other operatives are now planning on carrying out attacks against Americans." Powell's warning was conveyed to the Taliban by U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan William B. Milam, who specifically discussed Osama bin Laden with the Taliban's representative Abdul Salam Zaeef.

INTELWIRE has published thousands of pages of primary source documents on terrorism, extremism and related political issues, obtained from sources, court records and through the Freedom of Information Act. Documents are published online and in INTELWIRE Sourcebooks.

    In addition to INTELWIRE's published documents, J.M.     Mission Statement

    INTELWIRE is committed to making primary source information available to reporters, amateur researchers and the general public. Most of these documents are formerly classified, and most have never been published before. Many have been redacted by the government prior to their release. INTELWIRE has not redacted any information except in rare cases where inappropriate data, such as Social Security numbers, were inadvertently released.

    Future Releases

    The blog content will include thousands of pages of declassified documents footnoted in the Final Report of the 9/11 Commission. The blog will also publish thousands of pages of classified declassified documents related to the global War on Terror, Islamic radicalism, the history of al Qaeda and U.S. domestic terrorism, including right-wing, racist and Christian extremist groups.

    Document Sources

    INTELWIRE obtains documents through the Freedom of Information Act, court records and other sources. Costs often range into the hundreds of dollars for any given area of inquiry.
